At Fudge Kitchen we’ve been hand-crafting our original special recipe fudge for over 35 years, using traditional methods and a lot of love. You’ll find our fudge is devilishly different to any that you’ve ever tasted before. It’s made with fresh whipping cream which makes it smooth, soft, creamy and delicious. We also offer our own unique version of Gourmet Butter Fudge (only available online), jars of luxury Fudge Sauce, selections of Drinking Fudge, Fudge Making Kits and Fudge Experiences at our High Street Shops. Our fudge is made with natural ingredients, no preservatives, is vegetarian friendly and gluten free (unless stated) and may contain nuts due to manufacturing methods. Vegan flavours are available.
We first started making fudge in the UK, as Jim Garrahy's Fudge Kitchen, back in 1983 - but the story of fudge goes back even further...
Fudge is born from a fudge
Fudge originates not from Devon or Cornwall, as many people imagine, but was in fact ‘born’ at a female college in Vasser, USA.
A college lecturer was taking a class in toffee making when the temperature of the concoction was not taken high enough. The end product was called ‘fudge', which is why the term ‘fudge’ is used to indicate a mistake or error.
The US remains one of the fudge-making centres of the world. For example tiny Mackinac Island off the coast of Michigan has over fourteen fudge shops in just two streets, many dating back to the 19th Century.
The fudge we make today is inspired by this heritage. Our recipe dates back to 1830, and we still make our fudge by hand on marble slabs.
It’s fudge Jim, but not as we know it
Our American-style slab fudge is made using whipping cream instead of butter, giving a creamy soft texture and distinctive flavour.
All our fudge is freshly made and sold at our shops in Bath, York, Cambridge, Canterbury, Windsor, Edinburgh and Oxford. Visit one of our shops and you can try a free sample and catch one of our unique fudge making demonstrations.
If you can't make it to a shop, fear not - you can buy our fudge online and from selected stockists across the UK.
Once you've purchased your delicious fudge it probably won't last long but just in case, we've also prepared some advice on caring for fudge.
About Jim Garrahy
The late great Jim Garrahy was the original creator for our unique blend of creamy slab fudge, made in a fudge kitchen. An Irish-American, Jim Garrahy first inspired the launch of our fudge into the UK and then supported us along our journey.
After using the brand name "Jim Garrahy’s Fudge Kitchen" in the UK since 1983, we decided to shorten our name to just Fudge Kitchen in 2010, as this is how most of our customers and staff now refer to us. Even though there have been imitators along the way we were the UK’s original Fudge Kitchen.
Fudge Kitchen Today
Since 1983, our expert teams of passionate fudge experts have been carefully hand crafting the most deliciously creamy and indulgent fudge to a recipe that dates back to the 1830’s.
A visit to Fudge Kitchen is a sensual experience from the moment you are welcomed in by the waft of warm fudge and the pavement banter of our hugely entertaining, sample-wielding, boater-sporting staff. Inside a traditional copper pot bubbles aromatically with hot fudge, before being poured onto long marble slabs and ‘creamed’ with vast spatulas, turning flourishes of cooling fudge in the air, breaking up any granulation and ensuring the supreme creaminess that Fudge Kitchen is famed for. Throughout, our staff explain the process, the history of fudge making and offer free samples aplenty. Buying the still warm fudge at the end, beautifully packaged in wax paper and boxed, is an added bonus!
We are firstly specialists. No one in the UK makes fudge using an original mid-1800s recipe and traditional production methods in full view, as we do. Our hugely skilled artisans ‘slab and loaf’ over 25 tonnes of exceptional, fresh fudge every year from each shop and is literally recognized across the world.
We take considerable pride and care in producing the greatest fudge in the world, which is why all of our flavours are made with the finest natural ingredients and no preservatives. We are well known for the quality of our fudges, the authenticity of our product and techniques, the innovation of our fudge (with new, unique and vegan friendly flavours developed on a monthly basis) but predominantly, our staff.
Fudge Kitchen staff are a maverick bunch: entertainers as much as they are true confectionery geniuses (for making fudge is a fickle, involved and difficult skill). They are fascinatingly knowledgeable in the art of, the history of and the science of fudge making, genuinely passionate about fudge, but also quite bonkers, making every visit an entertaining, memorable experience.
Uniquely, we also offer Fudge Making Experiences, (available as an experiential gift voucher too), where you are taught how to make your own fudge, in your desired flavour, which you can then take away with you at the end of your experience session.
In addition to our traditional fudge, we have a range of brittles and caramels, luxury Liquid Fudge and devilishly different Drinking Fudges to ensure you are never left without a fudge fix!
